Winchester Model 1894 Carbine, 20" barrel chambered in 30 WCF (.30-30). It is a martially marked US "Spruce Gun" verified by the Winchester Arms Collector Association as authentic. This is one of the 1800 Winchester 1894's purchased by the U.S. Government Signal Corps on December 29, 2017 to furnish weapons to support their home defense mission of protecting the spruce lumber industry in the Northwest. Spruce lumber was essential in the production of aircraft for the US Air Corps in WW1. These 1800 rifles were delivered on January 5, 1918 to the Commanding officer, Signal Corps Troops, Vancouver Barracks, Vancouver, Washington. The full story about the Signal Corps mission to protect the spruce lumber industry and these Winchester 1894's was written by WACA member Rick Hill and was published in the Winchester Collectors magazine. A copy of the article with a list of all known serial numbers of authentic Spruce Rifles will be included with the carbine. The carbine itself has little if any original blue left, having turned to a light gray patina. There are some dark areas around the muzzle, on the rear sight and on the metal butt plate. The bore is shiny and the stock is in very good condition, but the forearm does has a small shallow area of wood missing on the left side by the barrel band. According to the WACA there are only 228 confirmed authentic 1894 Spruce guns known, and 19 fakes have also been identified. A scarce martially marked rifle for the Winchester or military collector.
